Intro MenReturn to index of stories... |
But first, a look at the newly formed New Hampshie Commission on the status of men. The commission is designed to hear and address MEN's issues here in the Granite State. Some of those issues include cultural bias and stereotyping, health problems unique to men, inequalities in educational outcomes between boys and girls, and, perhaps most importantly, finding ways to reduce the number, reported to be as high as 40%, of homes without fathers. We'll talk about some of those issues in a moment, but first, some background from Richard Ager. |
Men's CommissionReturn to index of stories... |
Script: Soundup: tape 1 10:01:40 It's of vital importance that this commission is meeting in NH. We think it is the first commission on the status of men Track: At the second meeting of the Commission on the Status of Men, members spent much of their time on defining their mission, and how to accomplish it. Bite: tape 1 10:02:29 We have to concentrate for a while - a year maybe - on hearing the men's side, because men are finally stepping forward and we need to provide a safe haven. We have to provide a safe neutral place where, as Mike says, men can pick those guts up off the ground for a minute and talk about issues from men's point of view. Bite; tape 1 09:25:37 I've identified two issues here that I would suggest we focus on early. One of those is involving men's health - the death rates - the prostate issues and cardiac issues in NH - and how those might be different for men in NH - the second one is the men's and teen's suicide rate. tape 1 09:27:10 Also, I think the commission could handle a third issue in the next 90 days. I've penciled it in as men's support groups. Track: NH established a commission on the status of women 30 years ago, but there was opposition to a similar effort for men. Bite: Senate hearing tape 14:58:02 A lot of the issues I heard were custody issues. They're important but again, they're issues, not systemic gender-based discrimination against men. Men are still in control. They're in control of the legislature, they're in control of employment, they're in control of the judiciary, and to pretend otherwise is to ignore reality. I've heard from a lot of angry people - and I'm sure some of that anger is justified - but I don't think this proposed commission is the way to address it. Senate hearing tape 14:59:30 All those in favor say aye.ought to pass 2-1 vote. Track: The bill supporters argued that both commissions should investigate discrimination. Senate hearing tape 15:07:01 If men are getting short shrift in custody cases - and that is always the rumor and the impression, then we need to look at that and see if there's any basis for that." Track: How dads fare in divorce promises to be a major topic for the commission. Bite: tape 2 10;57:25 If you've got one party stone-walling and the other party trying to be reasonable, nobody will ever know about it because you can't talk about it. Track: Many of the men who attended the meeting had a story like Jeff Oligny. Bite: Jeff Oligny tape 15:23:30 The silver bullet plan means the first thing you need to do is get a domestic violence order - A RESTRAINING ORDER? - which will evacuate a man from his home and his family and all his belongings. And that happened to me two years ago. and I haven't been back to my home - and I won't be back to my home. Soundup: Jeff Oligny tape 15:41:28 "Did you have a fun day at school?" "Yes, and I made this for you." Track: Now, Jeff sees his kids 3 hours every Wednesday and 2/3 of the weekends. Bite: Jeff Oligny tape 15:20:41 We're all offered anger management classes. I have to say that when the court is finished with you, if you're not angry, there's something wrong with you and you might benefit from a psychiatrist. Soundup: tape 3 11:37:38 Hopkinton police knock on my door. Mr. Emory, you're under arrest. I thought it was for parking tickets - I lived in Concord earlier and had a lot of parking tickets. So all right, I'm going for parking tickets - and then he tells me it's for criminal threatening. Track: Commission members have already heard much testimony concerning divorce cases, including this from a former social outreach worker in Concord. Bite: tape 3 11:44:00 I did find homeless people with substance abuse, but I also found under bridges men who got kicked out of their homes at night by their wives using that domestic violence - let's say tactic - to get them out of the home. And a lot of these men stay under the bridges and they don't eat, they don't come forward, they're very embarassed because it's a hard adjustment for men to have everything - and the next day nothing. Bite: Tape 1: 09;57:55 There is a women's health statute that requires a screening for breast cancer. Now we tried to come before the legislature about requiring insurance to also cover prostate cancer, and it was heavily opposed. And we need to prepare ourselves to know why it was opposed. Bite: tape 1 10:00;23 It looks like a self-dealing thing, it looks like you're looking out for yourself. They're very timid about that, but they're almost patriarchal - we can look out for women because they need looking after. So that's a problem we have. Track: One of many problems for the commission to tackle. For NH Outlook, I'm Richard Ager. Bite: tape 1 09;31:09 That fatherless one is one I think we can get a lot of information from these support groups - once we identify them and they become aware this commission exists and of the things we can do, and I think we can get a lot of input from those folks that will tie right into this fatherless problem. |
